Biochar is an organic material that’s been carbonised under very high temperature with little to no oxygen. It not only improves fertility and plant growth by up to 40% it also sequesters carbon! Made in the UK, biochar is a fantastic waste product of wood that would normally be sent to landfill where all it’s CO2 will go back into the atmosphere. The method of making biochar means the wood is heated to extremely high temperatures but isn’t turned into ash and instead, the carbon turns into a crystalline porous structure. This doesn’t biodegrade, so the carbon is captured and stored for hundreds of years. By then mixing this into your compost to spread on your patch, you are adding a product that holds water and nutrients to feed your soil and your plants. This natural fertiliser is part of the bigger closed loop system we encourage at Roots and we’re really proud to now start stocking this product! The best way to use it is to: Mix 1 part biochar with 7 parts compost, then sprinkle it onto your patch OR sprinkle biochar onto your patch and then rake it into the compost there already
