Annual & Perennials

Charles Dowding shares his expertise on types of plants here. When you start to grow your own, you'll hear about Annuals, Biennials & Perrenials. Let's find out which is which!

It's good to know what to expect when you sow seeds & to know when to harvest or how many times you can crop a plant.

Annuals: These will be plants that you'll sow, grow, and harvest within one year, such as Carrots, Parsnips, and Celeriac.

Biennials: These are plants that when given more time to grow, stay in the ground past the end of the season, like Leeks and Garlic. In spring they will bloom their own flowers & produce seeds before ready to harvest.

Perennials: The gift that keeps giving, can last warm winters and grow even bigger next season such as Chard.

TOP TIP: Spring onions will over winter when sowed late and become a good-sized onion bulb
