Bean Wigwams

Ed's building support for his Climbing Beans. These structures will be made out of really simple materials. Mitch helps Ed, giving super advice on how to build a wigwam for your plants. You want it to be a tipi-like structure but have some fun with it and be experimental with them!

The hazel sticks used here are grown locally and harvested in a sustainable way as opposed to bamboo. You can grab these on your Members Area:

You'll need:

- Hazel poles or repurposed poles/wood

- Scissors

- Garden twine or string (make sure it's durable)

Put your stakes firmly in the ground, tie them at the top, twine around the outside, spaced at about 30cm for tendrils to latch onto as they climb up.

Loop the twine out of each stake, do each layer separately so if anything breaks you don’t have to replace the whole thing.

Ed & Mitch are planting Barlotta and Neckargold, Bean varieties. Direct sow two beans per hole of the same variety, and alternate variety between each hole. Backfill the holes with compost.

Top Tip: You can pre-soak the beans 24 hours before, to help rehydrate

If you want to try a structure like this with a hotbed in the middle for plants like peppers, aubergines, or tomatoes, tie string from the centre hazel stick running down into the hotbed. Get your plug, tie it around the bottom of the soil and gently wrap it around the tomato, this should give it enough support to grow tall and happy!
