Pea Supports

Join Ed on his patch today, where he is building support for the first of the season's peas!

Peas are climbers and it's essential they have something to cling to so they are able to put their energy into growth and not surviving against the elements.

Bring along your favourite climbing variety of peas. Today Ed is planting the Blauschwokker peas which can get up to 1.5 m tall!

You'll need:

- Two similar-sized sticks

- Screw hooks

- String

- Hammer

Side to side of your poles attach your twine. Make layers of string that reach down low enough for your baby peas to grow up and fill in any gaps so there isn’t too much space for the little tendrils to reach too far!

Draw the dibber through the ground in a straight line underneath the support. You can sow two rows of peas to grow up the same structure.

Try to space equally with around 10cm between each seed, fairly deep down to protect them from pests, so they don't get eaten before they've even started. Brush the compost over the top and pat it down.

Give your peas a watering in, they can take up to a week in the ground to swell before they start to germinate.

Then get your hooks and tent pegs to pin the protection into the ground. Pull it nice and tight and weave it around the holes and it keeps it on really well. Ensure you have enough netting to keep the pigeons away, they love pea shoots, almost as much as Ed!
