Composting 101

You can make a DIY static compost bin on your Patch! Ed is at Roots Allotments today to show us how to successfully create healthy compost on your patch and what it's made up of!

Process your own food waste, a circular system, making nutrients for your allotment. You might start thinking differently about soil when you make your own compost, the benefits for your patch & the extra steps you can take to reduce your carbon footprint!

You just need a piece of chicken wire, this will give good airflow and is plastic-free!

A fantastic ratio for your compost bin is:

Green waste - 40% - leaves, peelings, grass cuttings

Brown waste - 50% - straw, cardboard packaging, egg shells

Nitrogen material - 10% - fruit or coffee grounds

Make some layers of each type of material. Chopping and turning your compost helps the worms break down the waste quickly.

How long does food waste take to break down? When is it ready to use? Why is homemade organic compost the best for your No Dig Bed? Check out this video to find out more.

TOP TIP: Keep an eye out for the next Roots compost workshops at your location.
