Winter is coming! Charles Dowding is preparing the Market Garden for the colder months. So what jobs need to be done at your Roots Patch?
In the Autumn - your options for growing are a little more limited but you can still be sowing some hardier salad leaves such as Spinach, Mizuna & Lambs Lettuce in August ready to grow on into winter. Broad Beans are great this time of year, especially in early November.
Green manure/Cover Crops help supercharge your soil, mustard is a brilliant one, find some of these seeds in your latest Seed Drop. This is a fantastic technique for the No Dig Method. Feed your soil life with plenty of carbon, and suppress weeds!
Garlic can be combined with your cover mustard. Garlic is dormant until winter when it sets its roots down so you can harvest in the Spring.
Leeks, Kale, Chard & Spinach are crops that like to be overwintered & Cabbage too!
Remember to fleece your plants from the first frost. However, fleece will not be needed throughout Winter, as it's likely to be damaged by the weather. As for the rest of the patch, the best thing to do is mulch with compost 1-2 Inches.
The main job is to keep your beds weeded over Winter which a lovely thing to do to get you outside and in the fresh air.
