Hoops & Netting

Kate grows all year round at her Market Garden, Four Acree Farm. She sells her incredible organic produce every week, so protecting her crops is an absolute must. Kate will share how she uses hoops with netting or fleece to do this.

Your fruit & veg is likely to need some extra help over the colder part of the season. Covering with fleece is a good way to create a micro-climate for plants to keep growing in chillier months.

Fleece or netting can also provide protection from pests, such as pigeons and aphids Your plants are most vulnerable when they are small.

Keeping in mind how tall your plants might grow, choose the size of your hoops. Simply place hoops a metre apart, pressing into the soil. Bring your preferred material to cover with and build a small tunnel. Pull those sides down as tight as possible and weigh it down with bricks and tent pegs.

Remember to check underneath regularly for cheeky slugs or caterpillars!

Please help us to reduce plastic waste, by opting for a sturdy material that will last a good few seasons, and secure your tunnels as best you can to avoid them blowing into your neighbours' paths or patches.
