Planting Peas

Are you growing Peas in your No Dig patch this year? Peas can be tricky to space, as they attract a lot of hungry visitors! Watch this video with Charles Dowding to find out more.

Peas like each other's company and grow best in spring. Always raise more plants than you think you will need as you'll likely have a few lost to pests or even weather conditions.

When it comes to planting, module transplants are preferable. Charles explains that by direct sowing there’s more chance of pests or of them drying up in the heat. For spacing, use your dibber and run two lines along a bed, about 15cm apart.

Create a support structure, posts and string or netting. Tall and medium peas will definitely need structures whereas dwarf peas may not need them. Check out Roots Ed's Pea structure here:

Note that one seed makes three or four bushy plants, but there are many varieties, always read your seed packet to know what to expect. Here Charles is growing T'all Sugar' Peas, great for snaps. Peas are thirsty, keep them happy & green by watering lots!

TOP TIP: Harvest the delicate shoots for fresh salad, you can cut and they’ll grow back, while the pods are forming!
