Planting Beetroot

Charles Dowding is here to show us how to plant out your beetroot! There are many possibilities with your spacings for Beetroot and this will depend on how you like to eat them...

Will you sow your Beets directly or transplant them into your No Dig patch at Roots?

DIRECT SOW: draw your lines with the dibber, about 30cm apart, drop a beet seed every 5cm, and sow quite thickly.

MULTI SOW: a great option for root veg - on average you'll grow 4 seedlings in a module. When transplanting them in clumps, 30cm spacings work well for medium-sized roots. Make a shallow drill with your dibber  & press in with your fingers. You can then walk down the row to firm them into their new home further.

As before you can inter-sow close to radish to make the most of your space.

Beetroots love going into the ground with their friends, an introduction to companion planting!

Towards harvest time, twist out the biggest one from the clump and give space for the others to grow.

TOP TIP: Save water by using the watering can plant by plant, instead of on the whole area.
