Today Charles will help us clear the last of our tomato plants at the end of the season.
This Sungold has been cropping bountifully all summer and Charles has cleared green from the bottom to encourage more fruit. Now the time has come to make room for the new salad beds.
So, grab a wheelbarrow or bucket to fill with the plant matter. Bring along a knife or trowel with you. Diagonal cuts downwards are the easiest way to chop the long stem as you go.
Charles explains how the smaller you chop the plant the better your compost will be!
Using the No Dig method, stand one foot on either side of the plant and pull directly up - taking out as little root as possible. This helps by feeding the organic matter to the important soil life and of course, your succeeding plantings!
