Lettuce Harvesting

Lettuce can provide incredible flavour whether it's the hearts or the leaves. They'll regrow every week or so and can be sown four times a year for harvest nearly all year round!

In today's Harvesting lesson, Charles Dowding shows the 'cut and come again' technique for your lettuce. The roots remain in the soil and the heart will continue to blossom new salad leaves.

Firstly, remove the outer leaves as they will have the most damage, add them to the compost pile.

Using a gentle tug and downward motion, harvest leaf by leaf from the outside in.

If you're preparing a big salad for your friends or family, you might want to harvest the whole heart! To do this, leave the plant to grow big & simply slice at the base.

Try to not cut too low down, remove debris and this stalk can now re-sprout!

You'll be impressed with how much nutritious food can be produced from a single plant by harvesting in these ways, and not pulling all of the roots out!
